Present
I am a ceramic artist and educator working in Auckland, New Zealand.
I currently tutor at local pottery studios, I offer private lessons and I give regular workshops and demonstrations. Lately these have been focused on my work with glazes but I also teach throwing and hand-building.
Since October 2024 I have been researching Crystalline glazes and have made over 300 glazes to date.
My interest in ceramics has developed over 30 years and I have explored many aspects of pottery including slip-casting and mould making, hand building and throwing.
I sell my work through exhibitions, occasionally at markets and I like to open my garden studio each year before Christmas. If you would like to know where to find me and my work please sign up to my newsletter, follow me on instagram @samdmakes or check out my Diary.

Past
I was born in the UK and grew up in a small town in Bedfordshire close to the South Downs.
My dream was always to be an artists so after discovering clay in my teens and being the youngest member of the local community pottery class I left home to live in London completing a degree in ceramic design at Central St. Martins.
Upon graduating set up a studio and developed a range of bone china lighting and interior ceramics.
1996 - 1997 Foundation in Art and Design - Central St. Martins College of Art and Design
1997 - 2000 BA (Hons) Ceramic Design - Central St. Martins College of Art and Design
